Background of the Study

School sports facilities are critical to promoting active participation in physical education, particularly in settings where modern equipment and well-designed spaces can significantly enhance student engagement. In Jos North, the availability and quality of sports facilities have a direct impact on the level of participation in physical education classes (Chukwu, 2023). Schools equipped with modern gyms, outdoor tracks, and multi-purpose courts provide a conducive environment for students to engage in various physical activities, which in turn fosters a culture of fitness and well-being (Adebola, 2024). Conversely, inadequate or outdated facilities can discourage participation, leading to lower levels of physical fitness and reduced interest in sports (Ike, 2025). In Jos North, recent investments in sports infrastructure have been made, yet disparities still exist between schools with state-of-the-art facilities and those with minimal resources. These differences highlight the need to assess the impact of sports facilities on student participation. Furthermore, the presence of quality facilities can serve as a motivational factor, encouraging students to develop their skills and participate actively in competitions and physical activities (Gana, 2023). The relationship between facility quality and participation is not merely physical but also psychological, as students often derive a sense of pride and belonging from attending well-equipped schools (Ogochukwu, 2024). Research suggests that improved sports facilities contribute to enhanced social interactions, teamwork, and overall academic performance (Uche, 2025). Given the importance of these factors, this study seeks to analyze how the availability, condition, and accessibility of school sports facilities influence students' participation in physical education in Jos North. By investigating these dynamics, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for school administrators and policy-makers to ensure that investments in sports infrastructure yield maximum benefits in terms of student engagement and overall health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Although improvements have been made in school sports facilities in Jos North, disparities in the quality and accessibility of these facilities continue to impact students' participation in physical education. Many schools still operate with outdated equipment, insufficient maintenance, and limited space, which hinders the ability of students to engage in a full range of physical activities (Obi, 2023). This uneven distribution of resources contributes to a gap in student participation, where schools with better facilities report higher levels of engagement compared to those with minimal infrastructure (Chima, 2024). The problem is further compounded by a lack of effective management and scheduling that maximizes facility usage, leaving some students with limited opportunities to benefit from available resources. Additionally, the absence of standardized policies governing the maintenance and upgrading of sports facilities exacerbates these issues, leading to disparities in physical education outcomes. This research aims to explore the extent to which the quality of school sports facilities influences student participation in physical education. It will identify the primary challenges faced by schools in providing adequate facilities and examine the effects of these challenges on student motivation and engagement. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to participate in physical education, regardless of the current state of their school's sports facilities (Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the impact of the quality of school sports facilities on student participation in physical education.

• To identify challenges in the maintenance and accessibility of sports facilities.

• To recommend strategies for improving sports facility management to boost participation.

Research Questions

• How does the quality of sports facilities influence students’ participation in physical education?

• What are the main challenges in maintaining and accessing sports facilities in Jos North schools?

• Which interventions can enhance the utilization of sports facilities for physical education?

Research Hypotheses

• H₁: High-quality sports facilities are positively associated with increased student participation in physical education.

• H₂: Poor maintenance of sports facilities negatively impacts student engagement in physical education.

• H₃: Implementing effective facility management practices leads to higher levels of student participation.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the critical role that school sports facilities play in promoting active participation in physical education. The findings will help school administrators and policy-makers in Jos North to identify and address the challenges related to facility quality and management. By recommending effective strategies, the research aims to enhance the overall physical education experience, fostering improved health and academic performance among students. These insights will contribute to better resource allocation and infrastructural planning in educational institutions (Emeka, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to investigating the influence of school sports facilities on students' participation in physical education in Jos North Local Government Area. It does not extend to other subjects or regions and focuses exclusively on sports facility-related factors.

Definitions of Terms
